use arrow keys to navigate to the BOOT tab.keep holding F2 until the UEFI screen (aka BIOS) pops up. Press and hold F2, then power on laptop. To do this on my Acer: (firstly, laptop has to be powered off). Disabling UEFI and switching it to Legacy (which also disables secure boot) will allow me to tell the computer to look at other locations when booting up.it doesn't care if I have a windows repair CD, or USB recovery flash drive plugged in. With UEFI (and secure boot) enabled, my computer is ONLY looking for the operating system on the internal HDD (or SSD). my Acer has the “no bootable device” error when booting up.if you hear clicking, then your HDD is more than likely toast. and these make a noticeable sound when they are running (smooth high pitched whirling). More often than not, these are standard with many factory systems. Almost like a high-tech record player there's a spinning platter that stores the data (the vinyl), and a read/write arm with a magnetic head that access the platter (not unlike the tonearm and cartridge-needle on a record player). these are traditional hard drives with mechanical moving parts. they are fast! they tend to be included with higher end systems or as aftermarket upgrades. Think of it like how a usb flash drive works. Even if they fail, there will never be any clicking sounds, vibrations. there are no mechanical movements in these hard drives. here are some important points that need clarifying. Don't need to download drivers, as windows will automatically download them for you. Some misleading and incomplete info in a few of these replies. After reinstalling download the softwares like Predator Sense from acer's official website. Download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's official website. In the end, if you don't like it, you can always remove it, without any hassel.Īlso I would suggest you to reinstall Windows 10 on your PC (as preinstalled Windows is very bloated). Regarding fan speed, always game on Windows, as games are more optimised on Windows, hence don't worry about fans. Summary - since you bought a gaming laptop, hence you shouldn't think about the battery life, as it will suck eventually. Check this answer I posted in the past, to successfully undervolt your laptop. But undervolting will help to reduce the temps significantly. Overheating - It does not overheat, but still it is a bit warmer on Ubuntu (Ubuntu - 60 normally and Windows - 50 degrees normally), than on Windows. However, under very low usage, windows can get upto 5 hours, but on Linux it doesn't matter whether the laptop is in idle mode. On windows I get around 3-4 hours and on Ubuntu I get around 2.5 hours of screen time. A LOT.īattery life - Battery life is pretty much poor on helios 300 itself (whether on Windows or Linux), due to the power hungry hardware. Hence I would conclude that it is not possible to control fan speed. Believe me I have spent the first 2 months daily searching for any software which would let me control the fan speed, but all in vain. I have personally installed around 7-8 distros, and all run fine.įan speed - no, I have not yet found any software which would let me control fan speed. There is no modern laptop on which Linux cannot be installed, i.e., yes, you can easily install any Linux distro on this laptop. I have used Acer Predator Helios 300 (2018 version, PH315-51 and also 2019 version, PH315-52), hence I think I can answer them satisfactorily.
